Nearly 10,000 nephrologists and other kidney professionals from around the world gathered last week in Orlando, FL, for 2022 Kidney Week, hosted by the American Society of Nephrology (ASN). Held between 3-6 November, this event is considered to be one of the largest and most prestigious meetings in nephrology, worldwide.
Diaverum’s Medical Team was an active participant during the event, having presented two posters.
The first was entitled “Comparative Effect of Pre-Dialysis Nephrologic Care on Long-Term Mortality and Hospitalisation After Dialysis Initiation”. Dr Mathias Harhaus, Corporate Head of Science & Research and Country Medical Director for Sweden, commented that: “patients who were followed by a nephrologist before starting dialysis have better survival and require less hospital care for up to 5 years after dialysis starts. Seeing a nephrologist before dialysis starts has a long-lasting impact on the life of dialysis patients. Reimbursing this type of care should be a high priority for health care administrations.”
Regarding the second poster, “Regional Differences in Quality of Life in a Large Multinational Population of Chronic Haemodialysis patients”, Dr Carla Santos, Medical Director, said: “the results of our 2021 Quality of Life survey were presented. This work reported poor quality of life in the dialysis population, particularly amongst women and sicker patients. Interestingly, these findings were more evident in the Western Europe population, highlighting the need for region-specific quality of life promoting strategies.”
Dr Fernando Macário, Chief Medical Officer, who also participated in the event, commented on its significance: “I was very pleased that our medical team had the opportunity to present at Kidney Week, which offers participants the unique prospect to learn about the latest scientific and medical advances in basic & clinical research in clinical nephrology, dialysis and kidney transplantation. It is proof of our contributions to the advancement of renal care and I am delighted to extend my congratulations to the team for their excellent work”.
Dr Macário also shared insights into topics covered during the event: “We were also pleased to hear from our peers on subjects that included new therapies for chronic kidney disease, extensive discussions on home dialysis and the latest advances in xenotransplantation.”
