MVZ Diaverum Schlankreye in Hamburg - Peritoneal dialysis

Peritoneal dialysis in our MVZ Dialyse Schlankreye

In our dialysis center, we offer our patients a wide range of services and different types of dialysis treatment. A particular focus lies on peritoneal dialysis (PD).

Peritoneal dialysis Hamburg

Peritoneal dialysis is a type of home dialysis. In this form the patient's peritoneum is used as a filter to purify the blood. The treatment is usually carried out by the patient himself or with the help of relatives. This form of dialysis gives patients maximum freedom and flexibility in everyday life. In our center we offer the following forms of peritoneal dialysis:

CAPD (continuously ambulatory peritoneal dialysis)

Approximately 2 litres of dialysis fluid is infused into the abdomen through a special tube called a PD catheter. The cleaning process uses the membrane in the abdomen as a natural filter. Waste products and excess water are removed from the body into the dialysis fluid through the peritoneal membrane. After 4-12 hours, this fluid is drained from the abdomen in a process named ‘drainage’. After that, new sterile fluid is instilled into the abdomen and the process starts all over again. Here you find more information about CAPD

APD (Automated Peritoneal Dialysis)

With APD a machine helps to perform the removal of wastes and excess water from your body over a period of 8-10 hours while you sleep during the night. The machine measures the fluids needed for each exchange and it times the delivery, dwell and drainage carefully and automatically. This means dialysis fluid usually does not need to be changed during the day. Depending on the medical needs the treatment is provided daily or three times a week intermittent. Here you find more information about APD, also called continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis (CCPD) CAPD

In-clinic IPD (Intermittent Peritoneal Dialysis), also nocturnal

Also in IPD, the bag is changed automatically by a machine. The treatment is usually provided three times a week in the center with the support of our nurses and lasts 8-10 hours. IPD can also be carried out during the night, if the peritoneal catheter gets connected to a so-called cycler, which converts about 15 liters of dialysate during the next 8-10 hours.
