The city of Vilnius is the capital city of Lithuania, located in the south-east of the country. In 2009 Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture.
Where the spirit of East and West meets
Vilnius is a city of rich European experience, a city within which different architectural styles are intertwined, and where the spirit of East and West meets. The city is home to major companies and key financial institutions. Vilnius Old Town is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Vilnius has developed over the course of many centuries, and has been shaped by the city’s history and a constantly changing cultural influence. It is a place where some of Europe’s greatest architectural styles - gothic, renaissance, baroque and neoclassical - stand side by side and complement each other. The central squares in the Old Town are the Cathedral Square and the Town Hall Square. One of the most elaborate architectural complexes is the Vilnius University Architectural Ensemble, which occupies a large part of the Old Town and has 13 courtyards.
Its history and sights mixed with vibrant city life make Vilnius a place that visitors will never forget.
