World Kidney Day 2014: Activities in Portugal
Diaverum Portugal celebrated World Kidney Day by organising a couple of initiatives focused on the importance of patient education, public divulgation and prevention of Kidney Disease.
“Give life to your kidneys!” was the motto of a Public Session taking place at the Founders Gallery at the Porto House of Mercy. This session, organised by Diaverum, was open to the public and officially supported by several institutions. The session was chaired by the Portugal Country Medical Director, João Frazão, and counted with the participation of Dr Anabela Coelho from the Portuguese government. Dr Coelho was there to represent the General Director for Health, Dr Francisco George.
Other relevant entities in the field of kidney health, such as the Portuguese Transplantation Society, the Portuguese Society of Nephrology, the Portuguese Kidney Patients’ Association (APIR), the Northern Portugal Kidney Patients’ Association (ADRNP), the Portuguese Dialysis and Transplant Nurses’ Association, the National Institute for Rehabilitation and the Portuguese Blood and Transplantation Institute were also present.
Free Screening in the Centre of Porto
A free of charge, public kidney health screening session took place in Praça dos Leões in the centre of Porto where Porto residents were given the opportunity to increase their knowledge of kidney disease and of their own health.
During five hours, hundreds of people passed through the screening site erected for this event in order to carry out quick screening exams for hypertension, diabetes mellitus and proteinuria. The feedback from the population was excellent in terms of satisfaction and adherence. Everyone from the Portugal Head Office passed by the screening site and a true ‘touch’ and ‘can do’ spirit could be felt in the air.
