Lawen Cañete - Visit Cañete
Cañete is a city in the Arauco Province, Biobío Region. Due to its eventful history regarding the conflicts between the Spanish settlers and the native Mapuche, it is a vibrant cultural city with many historic sights.
The Mapuche ancestral land
For many years during the Arauco war, the city in the south of the region was fought over bitterly. It was attacked and re-established several times due to the military confrontations between the Spanish army and the Mapuche warriors. Still today you find many historic traces of this conflict, like the restored Fort Tucapel and the Museo Mapuche Juan Antonio Ríos.
Cañete is located close to the Pacific coast offering many water sports activities. Also close is the Parque de Lota Isidora Cousiño which was laid out in the 19th century and contains plants from all over the world, romantic paths and shady nooks offering views over the sea. Those who like such peaceful places and still favor sandy beaches should visit Lago Lleulleu. The lake also offers fine views of the coastal mountain range and the chance to interact with the local Mapuche community.
