At its core, engineering is an act of purpose — a discipline rooted in precision, driven by imagination and care. While grounded in science and logic, its true power lies in its ability to solve human challenges and quietly shape lives.

This unique blend of expertise and empathy is what led to Hassan Imzgane, Maintenance & Logistics Technician with Diaverum Morocco, being named the recipient of the 2024 For Life Award. His story is a reminder that “For Life” goes far beyond the medical care we provide — it resides in every person and profession that makes that care possible, sometimes in the most unexpected ways.

When I first set out to forge a career, I never saw myself working in healthcare. For over 15 years, I specialised as an electromechanical technician, focusing on electrical issues and diagnostics for modern vehicles. Nonetheless, I have always carried my father’s words with me: “Humanity begins when you help others”. This compelled me to seek a path that would allow me to directly impacts people’s lives. After some time, I met Dr. Bachir Mounib (Clinical Director for Agadir). Recognising my potential to pivot my skills towards a career in healthcare, he advised and provided me with training courses that helped develop my skills in medical equipment maintenance. This opportunity changed my career path — and my life.

Since joining Diaverum in January 2020, I have found immense satisfaction and joy in using engineering to solve challenges in our Agadir clinic. At first, it was difficult. Work pressure, complex cases requiring precision, and patient interactions as a beginner technician were all challenges I had to overcome. But over time, I adapted, built my confidence, and gained patients' trust.

One of my earliest projects was creating a water quantity measuring device to simplify tank monitoring. I also developed a simple solar-powered system to charge multiple patient mobile phones simultaneously. However, it took a major incident to realise the true impact my work could have.

In September 2023, a devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Marrakech, taking many lives and destroying homes. This tragedy affected all Moroccans and made me reflect about my own city: what if an earthquake occurred during a dialysis session? How could we reduce risks and ensure a rapid response? Dialysis patients are in a vulnerable state during their treatments, and our equipment is highly sensitive. It became clear that a solution was needed.

After researching available options and discussing the idea with Dr. Bachir and Najat Hamsek, our Head Nurse, I installed an earthquake detection system in our centre. The goal was to detect early vibrations and alert medical staff to take immediate action, particularly in regards to securing machines and ensuring patient safety. To strengthen our emergency response, I also implemented additional safety measures: a pendulum-based monitoring device to detect tremors and alert the clinic team; call buttons and a video surveillance monitor in isolation treatment rooms to improve emergency communication; and a video surveillance system in the clinic elevator to notify staff in case of malfunctions or trapped patients.

Beyond enhancing safety, these measures helped to reassure our patients, many of whom felt vulnerable after the earthquake. On a personal level, this experience showed me that my role as a maintenance technician is about much more than fixing malfunctions – it is about proactively finding solutions that can help our clinic teams provide vital, life sustaining treatment to our patients.

The moment I heard my name announced as the winner of the 2024 For Life Award, was extraordinary. More than a moment of recognition, it was a message that my work – the failures and successes; the achievements and the learnings – has made a real impact. The first thing I did was share the news with my family, my biggest supporters. Then, I celebrated with my colleagues— the doctors, administrators, and nurses—because this achievement is not mine alone. It belongs to everyone who works alongside me, to all those who believe that working in dialysis is not just a job but a humanitarian mission.

The meaning of "For Life" is about giving and making a lasting impact. Life is not just about living for ourselves; it is about making a difference in the lives of others. When you work in a critical field like dialysis, you realise that every effort you make could be the reason someone’s life is saved.

As for what the future holds? I have many aspirations, all centred around ensuring the quality of treatment and the safety of patients, staff, and visitors. There is much to do – and I’m so glad that this award has strengthened my determination to do even better – because every patient depends on us, and every second of our work can make a difference in their lives.
